Hong Kong appears to hang on every word from Beijing and eagerly awaits instructions on how to move forward, and therein lies the city's biggest danger.
While past Beijing leaders were realistic and pragmatic enough to allow Hong Kong’s common law system to continue, it does appear that those running the show these days lack the sophistication and worldview to accept the city’s “wayward” behaviors. Common law is simply antithetical to those in power but unwilling to accept checks and balance or being held publicly accountable.

I very much enjoyed your post There is one small spelling correction.
na·ive·té
noun
lack of experience, wisdom, or judgment.
"his appalling naiveté in going to the press"
Naiveté is a French word that was taken over into English without changing the French spelling.
Thanks Kathleen.
